    Our Educational Programs

    Shark Speak

Shark Speak explores the power of bringing words to life. The course is not so much about learning how to become a poet as it is about cultivating the space for student opinions to be heard. It challenges student to explore their goals, interpersonal relationships and social justice concerns. Acknowledging that everyone has a unique and inspirational message to share with their world, this class teaches students to communicate with conviction, passion and transparency. Via the authentic voice method, students will discover that public speaking is not only about presentation, but also about the ability to inspire audiences through one’s choice of words and style. Movement is taught as a means of influence as students tap into their own personal experiences to express their authentic selves.

    The Acting Lab

The Acting Lab teaches students how to present characters with empathy and participate more fully in life. Student activities focus on developing discipline and confidence through warm-ups, voice enunciation exercises, improvisation, scene work, creative writing, recitation and presentation. Students will ultimately present a short piece that answers two questions: Who am I?” and “What do I want to do with my life?”

    Shark Studios

South Lake’s Digital Music program provides a platform for students to explore the various dimensions of today’s music industry and develop an understanding of computer music production via a variety of virtual and acoustic instruments and genres. Students will explore their interests, study how music intersects with their lives, and learn to ask critical questions about how music shapes our society and communities. Guests from throughout the Seattle will area enrich the curriculum via visits and discussions. No prior musical experience is needed–only the desire to be creative.

    Ethnic Studies

Ethnic Studies - is an ethnic studies course designed to help students develop qualities that facilitate true success in life—things that status, power and wealth have little or nothing to do with. Individual self-concept and image preservation will also be discussed, as these attributes are often grounded in the holistic and inclusive knowledge of various cultures. This class explores a particular characterization of “C.U.L.T.U.R.E.” – collaborating to understand, love, trust, unite, respect, and empower – to learn more about what students think and how student self-concept can be influenced by culture and experience.

    AVID

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is a college and life readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful after high school by placing special emphasis on note-taking, writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills. Through AVID students are prepared for life after high school and given opportunities to develop the skills necessary to achieve their highest goals.

    Career and Technical Education (CTE)

South Lake offers a variety of CTE courses, including College Access and Career Essentials, which is a guided course designed to help students develop achievable academic goals, identify careers that reflect their passions and chart a course for success after high school. A focus is placed on developing 21st century learning skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication, media literacy and innovation. While most college programs only address college readiness, this program draws clear and recognizable distinctions between college prep, college readiness, and college access. The goal is to provide each student with the highest quality tools, information, and resources to make the best decisions to facilitate their life goals.

    GRADS Program

South Lake’s Graduation Reality and Dual-Role Skills (GRADS) program is an in-school program for pregnant and teen parents (both male and female). Classes focus on developing knowledge and skills related to a positive self-image, as well as preparation for parenting and financial independence. Young parents set life and career goals and prepare for balancing work with family responsibilities. An on-site Parent Education Lab enrolls infants and toddlers while their parent(s) attend classes at South Lake. GRADS is a dual-credit program, meaning that enrolled students concurrently earn college credits in early childhood and human development, along with their high school graduation credits.

    Partners

We are always eager to connect with partners to better serve our students. Come to the school and we’ll discuss how you might help. We want our families to feel their concerns are valued and respected and promise to work diligently to guarantee the ongoing success of all our students.
